I was reading an article recently that discussed sustaining change in the classroom. It spoke of the need for everyone in the education industry to step up and welcome new technologies but to also recognize that innovation is a constant. That change is not a one time event but a dynamic, ongoing series of events that needs to be embraced. When we view change as a single instance we lack the vision to sustain any real difference in results. So many failed attempts at improving remedial reading/reading intervention are based on a new "wonder curriclum" that, if taught with fidelity, will make the difference for all students. In reality reading curriculum is important but the ability to change the curriculum to meet the needs of staff and students is also important. One size definitely doesn't fit all and knowing that diverse needs require adaptation and evolution of thought and practice is of utmost importance. The shift we have seen to phonics instruction this past decade is wonderful and will produce sustainable results IF the teachers that are part of this shift recognize that phonics is a PIECE of the puzzle and that they must adapt what they teach to meet student needs. That is how we will sustain improvement to reading intervention in the classroom.
