Boredom Busting Activities for Your Students During the Break

by Christine

It looks like the daily routine of reading, writing, and arithmetic is on stand-by for the next week or two. Most students are cheering, and if teachers are honest, so are they; yet, there’s that little nagging thought: How can I create a smoother re-entry back to school in January?  We’ve run across a couple of great ideas that we’d like to share:

Puzzle Day: Send your students home with traditional puzzles, MadLibs, word finds, and crossword puzzles.

Christmas Break Journal: Give each child a small notebook and ask them to record their thoughts and experiences during the holiday break.

Family Game Night: Encourage children to play games like Apples to Apples or Scrabble Jr. instead of gaming or watching television every day.

Word of the Day: Give students a list of words – a new word for each day that they are out of school. Use the word in a sentence that ties into the holiday season.

Read for Fun: Invite children to read a bedtime story to their parents and siblings.

Cook Something: The holiday season is the perfect time for children to cook something with their parents by following a simple recipe.

Before we know it, this magical time of year will come to a close. So, let’s go out with a bang and back in with even a bigger recall bang! Share your ideas for student recall and retention here.

Thank you and best wishes for a magical holiday season.
