Does the Recession Affect Reading?

by Christine

Two and a half years ago, we saw the market drop 777 points and then it got much, much worse. Who knows what the future holds and, as for education well… your guess is as good as mine.

I do know that this current recession — what we might call our generation’s Great Depression — has, and will, profoundly transform the way we live, think, and work.

While we're taking stock of what really matters let's not forget that there are plenty of free resources like reading help. Consider:

  • Finding retired, educated volunteers to read with children
  • Adopting a high-touch, high-tech approach to learning to read
  • Visiting the library more often, and
  • Taking advantage of grants and other private funding

We can get through this recession by focusing on the future and to me, that future looks like students who are literate and richly educated.

How will you handle the lingering effects of the recession in your classroom?
