Reading Horizons Celebrates 26 Years!

Continuing Expertise in Elementary and Low-Level Literacy Instruction

The year 2010 represents the 26th year of business for Reading Horizons, a leader in low-level literacy instruction for students of all ages.

Founded in 1984, Reading Horizons has spent the past 26 years developing and perfecting computer software based on the effective Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself (DIP) method, first published in 1976. The staff at Reading Horizons originally produced only an elementary version of the software but soon became very aware of the need for a sequential, basic reading program for secondary and adult students. They applied for and were awarded a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grant from the Federal Department of Education to develop the Discover Intensive Phonics software for non-reading adults. The result was Reading Horizons.

Low-Level Literacy Development Reading Horizons is a proven provider of targeted solutions for students who have been unable to learn to read through traditional approaches and are, thus, left behind. Reading Horizons' programs have been used in all types of educational settings, including elementary and secondary schools, community colleges, adult-education centers, outreach programs, workplace literacy programs, and in hundreds of correctional facilities teaching inmates how to read. In fact, their flagship product, Reading Horizons, is used statewide in corrections in many states, including California, Delaware, Iowa, Missouri, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

The Discover Intensive Phonics and Reading Horizons computer software programs, along with their corresponding direct-instruction materials, have taught hundreds of thousands of children, youth, and adults to read. In literacy programs nationwide, even non-readers have advanced several grade levels of reading ability while using this interactive, multi-sensory software that deals exclusively with basic reading and word attack skills.

Reading Horizons is proud to have had the opportunity to affect so many lives and looks forward to another 26 years - and more - of dedicated service to the educational community.

Mission Statement

"As our company name suggests, our goal is to provide a dynamic, successful way for people to reach beyond their bounds and discover new horizons by learning to read. Accordingly, Reading Horizons is dedicated specifically to help people learn to read so they can be better prepared to accomplish real-life tasks that face them every day and create opportunities to expand their horizons in the future."

History

Developer of Literacy Program Reading Horizons partnered with the author of the Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself reading system, Charlotte Lockhart, to publish software to accompany her tremendous methodology and direct-instruction materials. Charlotte first published the program in the early '70s in response to the tremendous feedback she had received from peers who had seen her ability to change lives through effective literacy instruction. This partnership ended in 2001 when Reading Horizons was given the opportunity to purchase the copyrights to the system from Charlotte herself. Charlotte was a big believer in the mission of Reading Horizons and an early investor in the company. She served on the Board of Directors for many years, as well. The entire reading system has been published under one umbrella for the past eight years, leading to tremendous improvements in the curriculum and flow between the software and direct-instruction materials.
